CARLTON SEASON REVIEW
Overall, a disappointing year especially the last half of season. Thank gawd the last 2 games reclaimed some self respect.Often we were winning most of our 1st halves but we couldn’t complete the task and faded off into the wilderness.
Carlton were just too slow in both running attack and ball handling. Then we play Port Adelaide for a 2nd time and we were the complete opposite. Super fast handballs, bullet like kicking hitting the target on the chest, very few mistakes and well practiced manoeuvres. Proof we can play good footy.
There were a few stand out players for the year especially George Adrian Hewett who was sensational. Even better than last season. He topped the Kickin’ Goals Medal votes, amassed the most disposals for The Blues and had the most handballs in the AFL. As part of the Fab Four along beside Cripps, Walsh and Cerra - Hewett is now one of our most important assets. What a champion. Absolutely Blooby-ba-baloopius.
Ironically, Jack Silvagni was playing his best football before leaving the club.
Haynes proved to be a valuable defender for Carlton playing a strong leadership role.
Williams continues to shine in the forward line with some fancy ball play.
Weitering was solid all year as usual continuing his role as our key defender.
Cripps and Walsh had a decent year although many pundits claimed they were sub-standard. The fact is, an average game for these champions would classed as a blinder for most other players.
And then BANG! From out of the blue comes Frankie Evans. He played a major role for Carlton this year and continues to impress.
Our young players showed some real promise lead by Cowan and Carrol who are now regular picks in the team. Other young players to watch for are White, Agent Cooper Good Lord, Flynn Young and of course Moir. Moir will be one to watch in the future.
Carlton lost some valuable players at the end of the season. Tom De Koning took up a 8 year, 1.7 million per year deal with The Snaints. I get it. It was just too money to turn down.
For some reason, Carlton refused to offer Jack Silvagni a contract so after years of being mistreated, he had enough and left. Silvagni turned down a last minute $700,000 contract from Carlton and that was the end of the 3 generation of Silvagni at The Blues. Collingwood and The Snaints are actively pursuing him.
Carlton delisted Fantasia and Cincotta. Gunslinger’s future is also in question. Surprisingly Motlop remains an active Blue and most likely will get to play every game next year regardless of his performance.
And then there’s Charlie. According to the media, our gun goal kicker wants out. Apparently he has had talks with Sydney and raised the issue of leaving with Carlton during his exit meeting last week. Carlton refused as Charlie is contracted to 2026. Blimey … never a dull moment at Princess Park.
So what’s in-store next year for Carlton? There’s going to be much soul searching as they adjust to the harsh realities of finishing 8th, loosing key players and navigating an emerging, toxic environment.
