Field Notes from the farm. Seasonal living.

Lincoln Reds

A few months ago, I went with Phil the Farmer to a place near Melton Mowbray to see a small herd of Lincoln Red cows. Unlike Wagyu, these cows are tame. They’ve been socialised and all have names. Pedigree as well as every day.

Eight or so of them will be arriving at the farm tomorrow. A bull, weighing about a tonne, called Zippy, is included in the group. When I first met him he put his head down and leaned against me. He loved being cuddled. While I always maintain a healthy air of caution around any livestock, especially large animals, I am excited at the prospect of seeing Zippy every day, and getting to know him. I’m sure the others will be equally lovely too.

In the morning, we head off to the farm where we’ll supervise the loading up of the herd in their transport. We’ll then meet them back at Phil’s farm for the welcome and unloading.
